Video walls

Video walls of LCD monitors or large LCD/plasma flatscreen monitors

Video walls

Plasma screens or large LCD monitors can be connected together to display a single image as a video wall. You then have the option of:

Displaying a huge single image between all the screens on the wall
Displaying the same image on all the component screens
Displaying a different image on each screen

You will need a control box to connect all the screens together. Some plasma screens also come with the hardware to do this built-in, so that you can connect several of them together as an instant video wall. You will need a wall mount bracket for each screen and its worth checking whether the manufacturers plasma screens you are considering purchasing, use a standard wall bracket or a specialist video wall bracket, for example NEC,  that allow the plasma screens to slide out for replacement or maintenance without dismantling the whole wall, as the price of these special brackets are much dearer than standard wall brackets. You can buy 2, 4, 9, 12 or 16 screen mounting brackets to connect screens together for a video wall.

The links below give comparisons on plasma, LCD monitors, plasma screen mounts, video wall mounts, manufacturer specific mounts and  digital signage with our review of software packages.

Video wall mounts

The problem with a plasma or widescreen LCD monitor video wall is that there is an inch or more gap (bezel) between screens. Orion make Neodigm 84-inch plasma screen, which is actually 4 x 42-inch screens connected together with a very small gap between screens.  They also make Infinite modular panels for wall mounting or on a stand, allowing all kinds of configurations for many applications. Orion plasma screens.  This gives a better overall video wall effect, but obviously the cost of both options including all bracketry and any computer graphics cards, needs to be taken into consideration. Please see our section on manufacture mounts for details.  Manufacturer specific mounts

UK bracket manufacturers produce wall mounts for video walls. Often these are less expensive than the screen manufacturers own mounts, although of course you would have to dismantle parts of your video wall if you wanted to replace a screen.  Video wall mounts  LCD multiple screen stands

Digital signage

Another consideration is what you want to show on your video walls. As most of the plasma screens and LCD monitors tend to be for corporate use, speakers are not normally in-built, neither do they have a TV tuner, so if you wanted to show sports on TV then you would need to have have the appropriate inputs on your screens.   A fashion show in a retail store, for example, would probably not need sound.   Digital signage

You might want to convey your message via a digital signage software package. Samsung, for  instance include MagicInfo built-in digital signage software with some of the LCD monitors, which are built for 24/7 use and include coolers to stop overheating. They can be built into video walls.  Other manufacturers, such as NEC, nclude a Text Ticker feature in some of their corporate plasma screens,i which allows messages to be run across the bottom of the screen, much like you see football results displayed on your TV.   NEC also make large LCD monitors in portrait or landscape modes, as do Sharp.

Professional digital signage software packages are available, as are servers and players for pushing content  to screens 24/7, even worldwide if you use the Internet. Once you know what you want to produce you can then find a package best suited to your needs.

Even though plasma screens are less likely to suffer from plasma burn, (where a static image burns into the screen) if you are using digital signage banners to run across your screen, even though the moving part of the banner would be fine, you can still get plasma burn caused by the outline of the banner.  You can buy plasma screens which include a plasma burn protection features.  Some digital signage software allows you keep banner borders moving to reduce plasma burn. This kind of problem does not normally occur with LCD monitors.   FREE Digital signage guide

Video wall applications

Video walls are ideal in public places from hotels advertising their restaurant, bar, suites and health centre facilities, to race courses for displaying on-track betting or flight arrivals and departures in airport terminals. Other applications include highway traffic control centres, power plant control centre, subway and train control centres, building security centres, police and fire stations and information network centres.

Impact is added to your information or message by running one source over the entire video wall display to capture audience attention. Or display meeting agenda on one screen, meeting information on another whilst weather reports and national traffic information are displayed on the other screens.

Applications

Large screen displays can be used for the following applications:

Retail outlets retail stores, shopping malls

Installation

We highly recommend that you use local knowledgable installation engineers or we can obtain quotes for you from a third party manufacturers authorised installation company, where possible, to set up your video wall. All installation costs are subject to site survey. Cabling is not included in the video walls and costs extra, usually supplied and costed by installation companies. It may be necessary for additional signal distributor to be purchased (extra cost), depending on manufacturers video wall and site installation.  Please also bear in mind that plasma screens are heavy, and will require more than one person to move them to the installation site.    It is also advisable that plasma screens are checked to be in fully working order prior to installation, as we cannot accept responsibility for damaged screens after 24 hours from delivery; otherwise manufacturers warranty comes into effect and excludes damage.
